Why Rest Days Are Important for Muscle Growth (and Your Mind)
Hey Kettlebell Fam!
Here's something most people won't tell you, and most "hardcore" lifters hate to admit: sometimes the smartest thing you can do is stop. Rest isn't weakness, it's necessary, especially if you're like me and always want to hit some weights.
Used properly, rest is the secret that keeps you stronger, more unbreakable and ready to train more. Here's why pulling back for a day, or two, or even three can actually give you more momentum with your training.
5 reasons rest days make you stronger
1. Muscle is built during recovery
Muscle and strength aren't built when you train. They're built when you recover from your training. Every time you swing some weights around you're breaking tissue down and stressing your nervous system. Rest days give your nervous system, joints and muscles the time they need to rebuild stronger. Without recovery, you're just making yourself more injury prone, less likely to actually get good results, and eventually burnout.
2. Rest prevents burnout
Training hard every day without a break doesn't just wear out your body, it burns out your mind. Stepping back lets you take a breath, recalibrate and rediscover the drive that made you start swinging kettlebells (or lifting heavy shit) in the first place. A couple of days off can reignite your desire to train, so you come back to lifting with the fury you had when you first started.
3. Rest gives you clarity
A few days off give you time to ask yourself, "Is what I'm doing still working? Am I going after the right goals?" When you're grinding daily, it's easy to lose sight of the big picture. Rest creates clarity and focus. You can step back and see whether you're plateauing, or whether your training lines up with where your goals are. Clarity can save you months, or even years, of wasted effort if you’re just training aimlessly.
4. Rest keeps you in the game for life
Your goal isn't to crush workouts nonstop for 6 to 8 weeks. It's to stay strong and resilient for the rest of your life (or at least it should be). A solid rest day today can prevent an injury the next day, especially if you're in your 40s or older. Your joints, tendons and connective tissue need recovery just as much as your muscles do. And you should be in this for the long haul, so play it smart!
5. Stress plus recovery equals gains
Training stresses your body, and recovery lets it adapt and get better. That back and forth wave of stress and recovery is what produces better gains. Don’t do the recovery half of the equation and it’s harder to make the gains. But pay attention to both sides, and you'll keep growing and getting even better.
How to make the most of your rest days
Ok, so now you know why you should take a rest day (or two, or three). Here's how to make the most of them.
Keep moving, gently. You don't have to cut out movement completely. Take a walk, go for a bike ride or do some mobility work. Gentle movement keeps blood flowing and helps you recover without adding the stress weight training does. (Try my 4 go-to kettlebell mobility exercises.)
Eat, sleep and hydrate. This is the perfect time to get your meal prep ready and focus on quality food and rest. Sleep well. Eat nutrient-dense food. Hydrate like an athlete. Recovery isn't passive, it's active and absolutely necessary. (More on that in Why Sleep Is Your Secret Weapon.)
Reflect and recharge. Look back on your recent training. What do you want to keep, and what do you want to change? Journal your progress, reassess your goals, or just relax and recharge mentally (I like to play video games). Use the downtime to sharpen your focus and prep for your next training cycle, or just to recover if you've been feeling beat up.
Know when to push and when to pause
The strongest athletes know when to push and when to chill out. Both are good skills. Your body doesn't get stronger from being beaten into submission under weigth every day. It gets stronger when you give it exactly what it needs, exactly when it needs it.
Recover hard, then come back and hit it harder. Want training with the perfect mix of workouts and recovery, without having to think about what to do? The Kettlebell Training App does all of that for you. And you can try it FREE for 7 days.
